短小的英语文章:The art of living

What is it like to be old in the United States? What will our own lives be like when we are old? Americans find it difficult to think about old age until they are propelled into the midst of it by their own aging and that of relatives and friends. Aging is the neglected stepchild of the human life cycle. Though we he begun to examine the socially taboo subjects of dying and death, we he leaped over that long period of time preceding death known as old age. In truth, it is easier to ma the problems of death than the problem of living as an old person. Death is a dramatic, one-time crisis while old age is a day-by-day and year-by-year confrontation with powerful external forces, a bittersweet coming to terms with one's own personality and one's life.

Old age is neither inherently miserable nor inherently sublime-like ry stage of life it has problems, joys, fears and potentials. The process of aging and ntual death must ultimay be accepted as the natural progression of the life cycle, the old completing their prescribed life spans and way for the young. Much that is unique in old age in fact derives from the reality of aging and the imminence of death. The old must clarify and find use for what they he attained in a lifetime of learning and adapting they must conserve strength and resources where necessary and adjust creatively to those changes and losses that occur as part of the aging experience. The elderly he the potential for qualities of human reflection and observation which can only come from hing lived an entire life span. There is a lifetime accumulation of personality and experience which is ailable to be used and enjoyed.

But what are an individual's chances for a "good" old age in America, with satisfying final years and a dignified death? Unfortunay , none too good. For many elderly Americans old age is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation , desolation and muted rage. This can be a consequence of the kind of life a person has led in younger years and the problems in his or her relationships with others. There are also inevitable personal and physical losses to be sustained, some of which can become overwhelming and unbearable. All of this is the individual factor, the existential element. But old age is frequently a tragedy n when the early years he been fulfilling and people seemingly he rything going for them. Herein lies what I consider to be the genuine tragedy of old age in America -- we he shaped a society which is extremely harsh to live in when one is old. The tragedy of old age is not the fact that each of us must grow old and die but that the process of doing so has been made unnecessarily and at times excruciatingly painful, humiliating, debilitating and isolating through insensitivity, ignorance and poverty. The potentials for satisfactions and n triumphs in late life are real and vastly under explored. For the most part the elderly struggle to exist in an inhospitable world.

短小的英语文章:The lowest animal

Man is the only animal that robs his less fellow of his country-takes session of it and drives him out of it or destroys him. Man has done this in all the ages. There is not an acre of ground on the globe that is in session of its rightful owner, or that has not been taken away from owner after owner, cycle after cycle, by force and bloodshed.

Man is the only Sle. And he is the only animal who ensles. He has always been a sle in one form or another, and has always held other sles in bondage under him in one way or another. In our day he is always some man's sle for wages, and does the man's work; and this sle has other sles under him for minor wages, and they do his work. The higher animals are the only ones who exclusively do their own work and provide their own living.

Man is the only Patriot. He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at hey expense to grab sls of other people's countries, and keep them from grabbing sls of his. And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"-with his mouth.

Man is the Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion-sral of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a greyard of the globe in trying his honest best to ooth his brother's path to happiness and heen. He was at it in the time of Caesars, he was at it in Mahomet's time, he was at it in the time of the Inquisition, he was at it in France a couple of centuries, he was at it in England in Mary's day, he has been at it r since he first saw the light, he is at it today in Crete-as per the egrams quoted above-he will be at it somewhere else tomorrow. The higher animals he no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out, in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.

Man is the Reasoning Animal. Such is the claim. I think it is open to dis. Indeed, my experiments he proven to me that he is the Unreasoning Animal. Note his history, as sketched above. It seems plain to me that whatr he is he is not a reasoning animal. His record is the fantastic record of a maniac. I consider that the strongest count against his ince is the fact that with that record back of him he blandly sets himself up as the head animal of the lot: whereas by his own standards he is the bottom one.

In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which the other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived toger in peace; n affectionay.

短小的英语文章:Living a solitary life

The other day an acquaintance of mine, a gregarious and charming man, told me he had found himself unexpectedly alone in New York for an hour or two between appointments. He went to the Whitney and spent the "empty" time looking at things in solitary bliss. For him it proved to be a shock nearly as great as falling in love to discover that he could enjoy himself so much alone.

What had he been afraid of, I asked myself? That, suddenly alone, he would discover that he bored himself, or that there was, quite simply, no self there to meet? But hing taken the plunge, he is now on the brink of aenture; he is about to be launched into his own inner space to the astronaut. His ry perception will come to him with a new freshness and, for a time, seem startlingly original.

For anyone who can see things for himself with a naked eye becomes, for a moment or two, soming of a genius. With another human being present vision becomes double vision, inevitably. We are busy wondering, what does my companion see or think of this, and what do I think of it? The original impact gets lost, or diffused.

"Music I heard with you was more than music." Exactly. And therefore music itself can only be heard alone. Solitude is the salt of personhood. It brings out the authentic flor of ry experience.

"Alone one is nr lonely: the spirit aentures, walking in a quiet garden, in a cool house, abiding single there."

Loneliness is most acuy felt with other people, for with others,n with a lover sometimes, we suffer from our differences of taste, temperament, mood. Human intercourse often demands that we soften the edge of perception, or withdraw at the very instant of personal truth for fear of hurting, or of being inappropriay present, which is to say naked, in a social situation. Alone we can afford to be wholly whatr we are, and to feel whatr we feel absoluy. That is a great luxury!

For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I he an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, lie down in the afternoon for a long think (why does one think better in a horizontal ition?), read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.

I'm lonely only when I am overtired, when I he worked too long without a break, when from the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I he seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out.

Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and perhaps,by looking again at each one as though it were a person.

It takes a while, as I watch the surf blowing up in fountains at the end of the field, but the moment comes when the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I he recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood, when I can converse again with my hidden powers, and so grow, and so be renewed, till death do us part.

范文四

Small Things To Do Every Day To Be Much Smarter

Ince is flexible and there are a lot of things to give it a daily boost. For art thinking your mind needs 3 things:

To be trained in thinking processes

To he plenty of rmation

To focus on a problem or idea

For example, Thomas Edison was able to think of his light bulb because:

He was a trained logical thinker

He knew a lot about electrical engineering

He focused on solving a problem

Here are a bunch of things to do ry day to your mind to think art.

1. Drink 2 glasses of water within 30 minutes of waking up

Since you’ve been asleep for hours, your body has not gotten water for 6-9 hours. Water is needed for the filtration of waste products and fluid balance. Two big glasses of water offset the fluid deficit you had from sleeping. Studies on kids (study 1, study 2) show that drinking more water increases their ability to complete mental tasks. Make sure your brain is not dehydrated at the beginning of the day already.

2. Read a book summary during breakfast

Reading books is great, but breakfast is far more suitable for soming shorter. Instead of reading news articles that he little impact on your life/ince, read best selling book summaries. You can find summaries by:

Googling your book title + summary, for example “7 Habits of Highly Effective People summary”

Use a summary subscription like Blinkist or getAbstract

3. Listen to stimulating podcasts/audiobooks during your commute

Even if you spend only 10 minutes on your bike like I do, load your phone up with inlectually stimulating audio. Good sources could be:

TED talks (their app lets you pre-download audio so you don’t eat your mobile data)

Blinkist has some of their summaries in audio form

Audiobooks you purchased

Podcast of your forite authors

4. Drink green tea while working

Where caffeine makes many people anxious, green tea (especially Matcha tea) contains l-theanine. This aminoacid causes an increase in alpha brain wes in the brain:

In pract this means that where coffee can induce anxiety, high quality green teas cause a relaxed focus without inducing sleepiness. This is also why l-theanine is ailable as a supplement to aid in relaxation and increasing cardiovascular health.

5. Take naps during the day

Napping s your mind refresh. It’s been shown that napping during learning increases learning speed. Your mind has a rhythm that determines when it gets sleepy and when it needs sleep:

Daily-Rhythm-Sleep-Wake-Cycle

As you can see on erage people feel more sleepy than usual between noon and 4 PM. This is a perfect time to he a nap, and will increase your alertness and productivity for the rest of the day. Personally I’ve has good results with t-workday naps too (around 6 PM).

6. Don’t take sugar during the day

In fact, if you can cut it altoger. But if you can’t for whatr reason, just make sure not to he it during times where you need to focus. Sugar highs and the following lows are not good to keep your brain functioning artly. What does work very well are fatty acids. Try to switch any sweet stuff during lunch for soming more substantial like fish or eggs.

7. Do social media / meme websites only a couple of times a day

The brain adapts to the rmation you throw at it. If you bombard it work non-stimulating and fast switching rmation your focus will get destroyed. Keep your brain functioning on a higher ll by throwing stimulating things at it. If you feel the need to procrastinate, set a timer and don’t get lost in mindlessly scrolling.

8. Play s instead of watching series or movies

Watching tv is a passive activity. Your brain is consuming rmation, but not processing or interacting with it. Substitute or supplement this entertainment with gaming. A 2014 study showed that n a like Super Mario has visible impact on brain plasticity (flexibility). Another piece of research covered by Forbes shows the same. Actively engage your brain where you can, instead of letting it slumber passively.

9. Read a book instead of watching tv

Similar to playing s instead of watching tv, reading a book is an active exercise for the brain. Where watching video entertainment is a passive consumption of rmation, reading a book requires your brain to actively construct mental images of what you are reading.

10. Do some programming

Programming is a great way to learn to think logically and in patterns. Coding used to be hard to learn but with free websites like Codeacademy and free/paid platforms like Udemy it is easy and fun to learn. Consider it the next ll of puzzles. As an added aantage learning to code in your free time increases your employability in the job market.

11. Watch TED talks while cooking

Preparing dinner is a great time to catch up on some cutting edge dlopments in Technology, Education and Design It turns what would otherwise be downtime into a fascinating and stimulating block of time. It’s like watching the news, only you are watching the world’s most inspiring individuals talk about their work.

12. Do some exercises during the day

The body and the mind are strongly connected. Physical fitness s the brain function well. You don’t howr he to go to the gym ry day to benefit from this (though you can of course). Doing some push-ups throughout the day and walking or skipping up some stairs has a great impact already. Try to do soming physical ry hour or so, n if it’s just getting up, stretching a little and tensing all your muscles as hard as you can for 5-10 seconds.

13. Spend time with someone arter than you

Habits are socially contagious. It is a well known fact in science that obesity for example spreads through social networks (link to research). The habits and thinking patterns of those you spend time with rub off on you. Exe yourself to people who are arter than you in order to benefit from them.

14. Talk to people who disagree with you

Get into (friendly) discussions with people who disagree with you on any topic. Arguing with them allows you to either:

Sharpen your arguments

Be convinced that you are wrong

In both cases you win. In the first you convince the other person by out reasoning them, and I the second false logic you previously had is not eliminated.

15. Go for a walk in nature

Walking through nature has a number of benefits:

There is more oxygen since plants produce it

The human mind calms down when surrounded by plants

Walking s your blood circulation

Hing a walk in a park at lunch time can greatly you work artly for the rest of the day.

16. Carry a notepad

Great minds like Leonardo Da Vinci always carries a notepad. They used it to jot down ideas, sketches and questions they had for later review. Hing a little book on you and writing down interesting things can greatly you train your curiosity and logical thinking.

17. Take 10 minutes at the end of the day to plan tomorrow

By planning tomorrow the day before you begin the day with a plan. This allows you to work much more productively. Many people are busy all day, but not actually productive. A great part of being art is knowing that hard work is inferior to art work. Pick your battles in aance.

The chickens will be fit to carry to market just at the time when poultry is always dear; so that by the New Year I cannot fail of hing money enough to purchase a new gown. Green-let me consider-yes, green becomes my complexion best. And green it shall be, in this dress I will go to the fair, where all young fellows will strive to he me for a partner; but no-I shall refuse ry one of them, and with a disdainful toss turn from them."

Transported with this idea, she could not forbear acting with her head the thought that passed in her mind, when down came the can of milk! And all her imaginary happiness vanished in a moment.

英语简单励志小短文:Youth《青春》

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
